Introduction

On behalf of the Kaiser San Francisco Medical Center Nursing Education Department I am pleased to present to you the 2008 catalog of educational programs. While additional classes may be offered throughout the year as needed, this catalog contains programming for 2008 based on input from clinical nurses and nurse leaders. This will allow you to plan your professional development activities in advance. Classes are designed to promote professional growth, enhance competency and aid us in our goal of providing exceptional care to our patients.

A hard copy of this calendar is also available to staff through the Nursing Education Department (x34801).

This year we are offering a variety of full and half day classes covering a multitude of topics. The calendar also includes Regional and local training programs, Computer Assisted Instruction programs, Life Support courses, Teleconferences and face-to-face programs offered through the Regional Patient Care Services Department.

Information on programs designed to assist you advance your nursing career are also featured in the calendar such as forgivable loans, scholarships, tuition reimbursement and degree programs in partnership with academic institutions.

We hope that these offerings will meet your learning needs and further your professional development. We welcome feedback regarding the calendar and suggestions for new courses as we strive to provide educational opportunities that contribute to positive patient outcomes and to the ongoing professional development of the San Francisco Nursing staff.

Class Registration  

 

Class registration is through the Kaiser San Francisco Nursing Education Department except where noted.
Class registration forms are available online, on the Nursing units or in the Nursing Education office (350 St. Joseph’s, room 019). Completed forms may be dropped off to the Nursing Education office, sent through interoffice mail or by FAX (X34237). You will receive confirmation of your registration. If you have questions regarding your registration call Lisa-Lori Lockman (X34801). Parking and food are not provided at classes.

Continuing Education Credit 

Each class/program listed in the catalog will indicate the number of contact hours awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements.  Certificates will be issued at the class or through the mail.

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 3094 and Board of Behavioral Sciences, Provider Number 1312.

 

Class Location

Unless otherwise noted, all programs are held at the Kaiser San Francisco Medical Center  (French or Geary campus).  If a class offering does not have a location listed check the computer site, class flyer posted on your unit, or call Lisa-Lori Lockman (X34801) for the assigned classroom.

Cancellations 

If you registered for a class and are unable to attend it is expected that you will notify Nursing Education (X34801) so people on the waiting list can be added to the class. 

The instructor may cancel the class if the minimum enrollment requirement has not been met two weeks prior to the class.  All registrants will be notified of class cancellation by phone.

 

Walk-Ins

Unregistered attendees cannot be assured of class space, handouts, notification of room changes, or class cancellations. Advance registration is required.

Tom Cowing, RN, MS

Tom has worked as a nursing assistant, orderly, LVN, and RN.  He has experience as a nurse on Med/Surg, Telemetry, SVF, and a long term -care ventilator floor.  In 2003, he was hired as a staff nurse in the ICU, and in 2006, he accepted a position as Stroke Coordinator.  Tom graduated with a BA in Biology and Chemistry from San Jose State University.  He received a certificate in Vocational Nursing form SF City College, and he received his graduate education from San Francisco State University.

Carrie Ewing,  RN, CNOR

Carrie Ewing, RN, CNOR, Perioperative Nurse Educator, has over 12 years experience in the Perioperative Services Department including ASU, OR and CVOR, PACU. She has combined her first career in Health Education with nursing to provide perioperative education. In addition to teaching the biannual Regional Perioperative Nurse Training Program, Preceptor Training, Workplace Resources, she is an ACLS and ECG instructor and always learning. In fact, she is now pursuing a MSN with an emphasis on Clinical Faculty at Holy Names University. Never to late to learn more!

Catherine Jansen RN, MS, OCN

Catherine Jansen has worked in Oncology for over 24 years and currently holds the position of Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco, California.  She is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Francisco. |Catherine received her BSN from the University of San Francisco and MS in Oncology Nursing from the University of California in San Francisco.  In addition, Catherine is an ONS Cancer Chemotherapy & Biotherapy trainer. She has authored publications in two Oncology Nursing textbooks as well as the Oncology Nursing Forum and CANCER, and has been a presenter on various Oncology topics at multiple forums, including the ONS Annual Congress.

Jay Johanni RN, MS

Jay Johanni has been in the nursing profession for 19 years, starting as a new grad in the CVICU at Kaiser San Francisco.  He received his AA in Nursing from City College of San Francisco and his Masters in Critical Care nursing from UCSF.  Jay is currently the Director of Nursing Education and continues to provide educational support to the Critical Care units. Jay is also a certified trainer in End of Life Nursing Care.

Katy Kennedy, RN, MSN

Katy Kennedy has had experience in the Transitional Critical Care Unit (TCU) at San Francisco as a New Grad, Staff Nurse, Preceptor and Mentor. After receiving her MSN at San Francisco State University, she worked as a clinical instructor for SFSU focusing on Public/Community Health nursing. Katy is the educator for TCU and for Med-Surg. She works together with Sybil Solis and educators from Kaiser South San Francisco to coordinate the Med Surg Training Program for new hires.

Ruth McMyn RN, MS

Ruth is the Surgical Clinical Nurse Specialist. She is Board Certified in wound, ostomy, and continence care. She is responsible for clinical consultations, and the education of patients and staff. Additionally, Ruth is responsible for the outpatient Ostomy Clinic twice a week. She received her Master of Science at UCSF.

Natalia Rabovsky RN, MS

Natalia started as the Clinical Nurse Specialist for the ICN in September of 2005 after graduating from the Master's program at UCSF. Previously she was a staff nurse in the ICN. Natalia will be working with the staff, patients and families in the ICN to facilitate the best care based on the most recent research evidence. Natalia will also be partnering with the staff in the clinic to follow ICN patients and families after discharge home.

Marilyn Williams RN, MS

Before becoming the Geriatric Clinical Nurse Specialist at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco, Marilyn Williams taught for ten years at the UCSF School of Nursing in the Gerontological Nursing program. She has completed research projects in care of the patient with dementia and just completed a randomized control trial of the effect of a Palliative Care Consult Service in an acute care setting. She has authored chapters on mental status and functional status in gerontological nursing textbooks and is also the author of articles on dementia, urinary retention, and frail elderly. She is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the UCSF School of Nursing.

 This course reviews hemodynamics, theory of balloon counterpulsation, clinical    management of a patient on balloon pump therapy and hands-on practice with the    Datascope 98 IABP.

Would you like to become more proficient in managing common cardiac, pulmonary, and neurologic emergencies?  This class will refine your knowledge of current trends in the medical and nursing management of angina and MI, pulmonary embolism, pneumothorax, CVA, and shock.  Class time will also be devoted to a variety of mock code blue scenarios and review of commonly used emergency drugs, equipment and procedures.

This workshop is intended for nurses and social workers who want to increase expertise in the provision of care at the end of life. Principles of palliative care will be discussed including an overview of the end-stage of common illnesses, management strategies for symptoms including pain, SOB, nausea and small bowel obstruction. Psychosocial interventions and spiritual concerns will be addressed, giving the clinician tips for how to be effective when speaking with patients and family members. Findings of the randomized control trial of a palliative care service in an acute care setting done at our medical center will be presented.

This symposium will focus on topics which relate to the practice of med/surg nursing and will be presented in 30 minute time slots to increase the participant's understanding of a variety of practices. Among others, topics will include: C-PAP and Bi-PAP, Trach care, Chest tubes, PCA and PCEA, seizures and a focus on critical thinking during crisis interventions.

"Uh Oh, Grandma's in the Hospital": Clinical Considerations in Caring for the Frail Elderly

There are only four things you need to know when caring for the frail elderly: Mental Status, Functional Status, Social Support, and Disease States. This workshop will review these four areas with a focus on clinically relevant strategies for assessment and management. Participants will also learn the relevance of the interaction of these areas when involved in the management of a frail elderly population.

The Oncology Nursing Society’s (ONS) Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course provides a comprehensive review of the knowledge needed to administer cytotoxic and biotherapeutic agents. Upon successful completion of the course and post-test, participants will receive an ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider card.  This card validates the participant has the theoretical foundation needed to administer cytotoxic and biotherapeutic agents.  The card is valid for 2 years

Target Audience:  Mandatory for all RNs giving chemotherapy in the hospital and therefore priority is given to nurses working in areas where chemotherapy is administered. Participants MUST BE registered nurses who have been employed as such for a minimum of six (6) months.  This course is appropriate for nurses who are new to chemotherapy administration, as well as for those who want a comprehensive review.

This class covers Nursing management of the patient undergoing cardiac surgery (focus on valve replacement and bypass grafting).  Common complications and management strategies, use of the clinical path, pre-printed orders and patient teaching tools are also discussed.

This full day workshop provides basic information regarding the indications for mechanical ventilation, complications, nursing management and commonly used modes on the Puritan Bennet 840 ventilator. Offered by Regional Patient Care Services, consists of 18 classroom days and a precepted clinical experience in the Operating Room.  Please contact the OR department director, for consideration and interview. The program accepts new grads and transfers, if positions available.

Telemetry Training Program  Return to Top  

This training program is designed to introduce the new grad and experienced RN to the care of the telemetry patient.  prepare nurses to work at an entry level in a Telemetry unit. The didactic program is overseen by NCAL Patient Care Serices and consists of 30 classroom hours supported by in-class exercises, case studies, and study tools.  An EKG rhythm interpretation class is required concurrently unless the nurse is able to provide evidence of prior study and competency.  The final class day is an interactive day utilizing the concepts of critical thinking to recognize and respond to the deteriorating patient..
